Slovic氏は、さまざまな慈善活動について、どのくらいの金額を寄付しようと思うか人々に尋ねた。その結果、たとえばマリ共和国のRokiaという名の1人の飢えた子どもの写真を見せられた人々は、驚くほどの気前の良さを示した。これに対し、アフリカ全土の飢餓に関する統計データのリストを見せられた2つ目のグループは、申し出た寄付金の平均額が50％低かった。

一見して、これは非合理的だ。問題の全体像に関する情報を得られたときこそ、われわれは金額を多く支払うはずだからだ。ロキアの悲劇的な物語は、氷山の一角にすぎない。
Slovic氏によると、統計データの難点は、われわれの道義的感情に訴えかけないことだという。厳しい現実を数字で見せられても、われわれの心は動かない。人間の心は、そこまで規模の大きな苦しみを理解することができないのだ。

われわれは、ひとりの子供が井戸に落ちたら心配で目を離せないが、清浄な水が無いことで毎年何百万人もの人が死ぬことには関心を持たない。雑誌の表紙に載ったひとりの戦争孤児には何千ドルもの寄付が行くが、ルワンダやダルフールで大虐殺が起こっていても無視される。

マザーテレサの言うように、「数として見た時には行動しない。ひとつの例を見た時には行動する」のだ。
